History

On November 26, 1996, eight years after it was bought by Sheldon Adelson, the Sands Hotel was imploded to make way for The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. Ground was broken April 14, 1997.

The resort opened on May 3, 1999 with flutter of white doves, sounding trumpets and singing gondoliers, with actress Sophia Loren joining The Venetian Chairman and Owner, Sheldon G. Adelson, in christening the first motorized gondola. Built at a cost of $1.5 billion, it was one of the most expensive resorts of its kind when it opened. A brief time line of the hotel's history:

* September 24, 1997 — Announcement that the Venetian's Grand Canal Shoppes will be managed by Forest City Commercial Management.
* November 14, 1997 — $1,000,000,000 financial package secured.
* August 18, 1998 — Venetian Resort tops out.
* August 24, 1998 — Venetian begins accepting room reservations, by phone and on-line.
* May 3, 1999 — Grand opening of first phase of complex.
* October 7 2001 — The Guggenheim Hermitage Museum opened within the resort, featuring its first collection: Masterpieces and Master Collectors: Impressionist and Early Modern Paintings.
* August 30, 2002 — The museum opened its second collection: Art Through the Ages: Masterpieces of Painting from Titian to Picasso.
* May 15, 2003 — Museum opens third exhibit: American Pop Icons.
* June 27, 2003 — The Venezia at the Venetian opened as an additional tower, adding 1,013 suites and a new wedding chapel.
* November 7, 2003 — Museum opens exhibit: A Century of Painting: From Renoir to Rothko, featuring paintings by Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso, van Gogh, Renoir, and others.
* March 19, 2004 — "The Nevada Gaming Commission Thursday imposed an agreed-upon $1 million fine on The Venetian for rigging contests and violating state gaming regulations but only after chastising other state agencies for not pursuing the case more vigorously. Chairman Peter Bernhard and Commissioner Art Marshall, who called the violations the "most serious" they have dealt with during their tenures on the commission, criticized the state attorney general's office and the Gaming Control Board for taking a year to bring the eight-count complaint before the commission. ... "This is the most serious complaint I've seen since I've been on the commission. The issues go to the heart of the integrity of the industry," Bernhard said. ... The Asian high roller at the center of the case, was preselected to win a Mercedes-Benz. The complaint said a Venetian executive who rigged the drawing with a cohort hid the winning ticket in his shirtsleeve and pretended to draw it randomly from a batch of entries before announcing the "winning" ticket."
* October 10, 2005 — Blue Man Group officially opens at the Blue Man Theatre.
* June 24, 2006 — Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular opened at a new theatre at the Venetian.

Film history

* Building the Venetian was the subject of an episode of the show MegaStructures.
* Various Venetian locations were the setting for the introductory scenes of the 2001 movie, Rat Race.
* A suite from the Venetian is featured as a location in the 2005 movie Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous
* The exterior of the Venetian is portrayed in the movie Resident Evil: Extinction. There is a dramatic zombie attack scene which takes place on the Venetian's replica of the Rialto Bridge.
* It also appeared in a scene of the 26th episode of season one of The O.C..

The Palazzo

The Palazzo (pronounced /pəˈlɑːtsoʊ/) is a luxury hotel and casino resort located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas. The Palazzo is owned and operated by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. The property's design is marketed as being reflective of a modern European ambiance and luxury living.

The Palazzo is reported to be the sixth largest building in the world in terms of available floor space and is also currently the largest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Parts of the resort were opened to the general public on December 30, 2007. The official grand opening took place on January 17, 2008.

The $1.8 billion resort features a Lobby where guests from the street arrive beneath a 60-foot (18 m) glass dome with a two-story fountain. Those approaching from The Venetian make the transition through a towering octagonal structure and garden, itself topped by a glass-and-iron dome. Visitors to The Palazzo using the underground parking structure can take elevators or escalators from the underground garage and arrive in the center of the property's casino.

The Palazzo Casino, like some other casinos on the strip, operates under the license of a related casino—in this case The Venetian's license. The resort's 642-foot (196 m) high hotel tower features 3,068 all-suite rooms and 375 concierge-level suites.

The Palazzo is LEED Silver Certified—the largest LEED certified building in the nation.

Currently under construction, the 270-unit condominium tower addition The St. Regis Residences at The Palazzo will be the first residential offerings at The Venetian complex. The high-rise tower is being built on top of the 90,000-square-foot (8,400 m2) building that houses the Barneys New York apparel store. On September 4, 2008, Las Vegas Sands announced that it had come to an agreement with Starwood Hotels & Resorts to operate the condo tower as a signature branch of The St. Regis Residences with all hallmarks of the St. Regis brand offered to residents.

History
Construction

As of February 27, 2006, the project had been under construction for over a year. Most of that time was spent digging the 4-story-deep hole to put in the underground parking structure. Then the building itself began gradually rising upwards. The steel fabrication and erection was supplied by Schuff Steel Company. By November 2006, the hotel tower had reached the 35th floor. Construction of the ground floors, including the parking garage and shopping center, were well under way.

As of March 2007, the hotel tower's elevator core was complete, and the rooms area was rising to the top. The facade and windows were being installed on the lower floors. As of August 2007, the lettering on the side of the tower was finished and is topped out.

As of December 20, 2007 the Palazzo was scheduled to open at least 1,000 rooms by December 28 in preparation for the Las Vegas New Years celebration. The casino and other areas of the Palazzo opened at 7pm on Sunday, December 30, after a delay of several days due to the Clark County permitting process.

Upon its completion, the Palazzo (its total floor area covering 645,581 square meters - 6.9 million sq feet) displaced the Pentagon as the largest building in the United States in terms of floor space, by a margin of about 35,580 square meters.

The structural engineering was done by Walter P Moore.

MGM Grand Las Vegas

The MGM Grand Las Vegas is a luxury hotel casino located on the Las Vegas Strip. The MGM Grand Las Vegas is the second largest hotel in the world and second largest hotel resort complex in the United States behind The Venetian. The MGM Grand was the largest hotel in the world when it opened in 1993.

Owned and operated by MGM Mirage, a publicly traded company, the 30-floor main building is 293 feet (89 m) high and features five outdoor pools, rivers, and waterfalls that cover 6.6 acres (2.7 hectare),a 380,000 sq ft (35,000 m2) convention center, the MGM Grand Garden Arena, CBS Television City, and the Grand Spa. It also houses numerous shops and night clubs, 16 restaurants, and the largest casino in Clark County, which occupies 171,500 sq ft (15,930 m2).

The hotel rooms are located in several buildings including:

* The main hotel building, with 5,044 rooms (4,293 rooms and 751 suites) including the SKYLOFTS at MGM Grand with 51 lofts located on the top two floors of the hotel building.
* The three The Signature at MGM Grand towers each with 576 suites (designed by Bergman Walls Associates)
* The Mansion at MGM Grand with 29 villas

It is one of the three[citation needed] large hotels in Las Vegas that has a 13th floor.[citation needed]

Located on the Tropicana - Las Vegas Boulevard intersection, pedestrians are not allowed to cross at street level. Instead, the MGM Grand is linked by overhead pedestrian bridges to its neighboring casinos: to the south across Tropicana Avenue, the Tropicana, and to the west across the Strip, the New York-New York.

History

On February 23, 1993, MGM celebrated a "topping off" ceremony with the placement of the last panel of emerald green glass hoisted onto one of the 30-story hotel towers. A total of 5,005 green balloons were released, each containing a gift certificate valid for one complimentary stay in one of the rooms.

When the latest MGM Grand opened on December 18, 1993, it was owned by MGM Grand Inc. At that time it had an extensive Wizard of Oz theme, including the green "Emerald City" color of the building and the decorative use of Wizard of Oz memorabilia. After entering the casino's main entrance, you would find yourself in the Oz Casino and facing the "Emerald City". Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion were seen in front of the city. The "Emerald City" attraction featured an elaborate yellow brick road walk through. Complete with a cornfield, an apple orchard, the haunted forest as well as audio-animatronic figures of the Scarecrow, Dorothy, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. It would end at the door of the city, leading inside for a performance of "The Wizard's Secreats". The Oz Casino also featured the "Emerald City Gift Shop" and the "Oz Buffet". When the MGM Grand began its extensive refurbishment in 1996, the Oz Casino was the first to go. The Emerald City was completely demolished, the "Oz Buffet" became the "Grand Buffet", and the "Emerald City Gift Shop" was moved to a new shopping section of the casino. The store remained open until early 2003.

The MGM Grand was the home of the long-running production show EFX from 1995 until 2002.

Originally, the main entrance on the Strip was inside the mouth of a giant cartoon-like version of MGM's mascot, Leo the Lion, but this entrance feature was changed to a more traditional entrance; many Chinese gamblers avoided the casino or entered through the back entrance, due to the feng shui belief that entering the mouth of the lion was "bad luck." In 1998, a large bronze statue of Leo was added above the entrance to keep with the MGM Lion theme, while not scaring away their more superstitious guests. The statue weighs 50 tons, and at 45 feet (14 m) tall, on a 25-foot pedestal, is the largest bronze statue in the U.S.
Leo, the MGM lion bravely guards the entrance to the MGM Grand Las Vegas.

When the MGM Grand opened, the intention was to create the first true destination hotel in the Las Vegas area by including the MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park behind the casino. The plan was to make the Las Vegas Strip more family friendly by providing activities for children who were too young to be allowed to linger inside the casino. The theme park performed poorly, and did not reopen for the 2001 season. On December 5, 2002, MGM Mirage announced that the former theme park would be developed as a luxury condominium and hotel complex called The Signature.
Poker Room in the MGM Grand

A monorail was built to connect the MGM Grand to Bally's in 1995. The coming out party for the monorail on behalf of Bally's consisted of showgirls and guys from Jubilee helping the groups to the monorail. Characters from the Wizard of Oz greeted the groups on the MGM side. The track was later updated to became the southernmost section of the Las Vegas Monorail. The station was refurbished, the trains were replaced with Bombardier M-VI's, and the track was extended beyond the southern station to provide for track switching for the trains as well as a starting point for a potential future southern extension to the monorail line.
MGM Grand today, with sign promoting it as The City of Entertainment

In 2000, in an attempt to appeal to a more "mature" clientèle, the hotel underwent a major renovation and almost all traces of the "Oz" theme were removed. The theme is now more of the Art Deco era of classic Hollywood and the hotel started billing itself as The City of Entertainment. More recently, the resort has used the phrase, "Maximum Vegas" referring to the vast amount of activities MGM Grand offers its guest.

On April 26, 2000, MGM opened a new satellite registration/hotel check-in center at the McCarran International Airport. This is the first of its kind opened by a hotel company at any United States airport.

In 2005, MGM opened the "West Wing," a renovation of the original Marina Hotel rooms.

First World Hotel

First World Hotel is the second largest hotel in the world by rooms. It comprises Tower 1 and Tower 2, each with 28 floors, and has a total of 6,118 rooms. It is one of the five hotels located in Genting Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia, along with Genting Hotel, Theme Park Hotel, Highlands Hotel and Resort Hotel. It was the largest hotel in the world until The Palazzo, an expansion of The Venetian in Las Vegas was opened in January of 2008.

The hotel is managed by First World Hotel and Resorts Sdn. Bhd, one of two major companies operating at Genting Highlands resort (the other is Resorts World Bhd). The resort can be reached by the Genting Skyway, which is the world's fastest (and Southeast Asia's longest) cable car, which travels at 6 metres per second.
[edit] Structures

The First World Hotel is a standard hotel at most of its rooms. Below the hotel is a 500,000 square feet (46,000 m2) plaza called First World Plaza, housing shopping malls, arcades, food outlets, Starworld casino, The Pavilion and the Genting indoor theme park. It has a stage for weekly performances (such as magic and music shows) at the area called Time Square, surrounded by a replica of the Statue of Liberty and an Oscar statue. Other facilities including Watersplash Pool (an indoor water theme park for children), Genting Sky Venture (Asia's first free fall simulator) and a cineplex.

First World Hotel main entrance forms the lush and grand tropical rainforest and a spacious Spanish courtyard at its lobby.

History

The site was assembled by buying the Desert Inn Hotel and golf course for most of the land. The remainder was acquired by purchasing private residences that were generally located along Paradise Avenue. While some owners sold early on, others held out. This resulted in numerous legal actions between the various parties. In the end, the site acquired totaled 215 acres (87 ha).

Wynn Las Vegas LLC contracted with Marnell Corrao Associates on June 4, 2002 to design and build the resort. The original name for the project was "Le Rêve" but was changed to "Wynn Las Vegas" well before the project was complete. The original name lives on in the stage production. Built at a cost of US$2.7 billion, it was the largest privately-funded construction project in the nation. This compares with the budget for reconstruction with the World Trade Center site which at that time was projected to be $1.7 billion.[citation needed]

The historic Desert Inn Golf Course was rebuilt while the hotel was being constructed. The course is now known as Wynn Golf Course.

Early advertising for the resort featured exterior images of the hotel tower, with Steve Wynn standing on the roof, just above his signature logo. The initial commercial aired in some local spots during the 2005 Super Bowl, and eventually national spots as opening drew near. A "teaser" website for the resort included both the commercial and a "making-of" video.

Wynn Las Vegas opened on April 28, 2005, Wynn's wife's birthday, the 55th Anniversary of the opening of the original Desert Inn, and five years from the day Steve Wynn purchased the site.

On May 12 and 13, 2007, Wynn dealers voted 444-149 in favor of representation by the Transportation Workers Union. The vote is a result of controversial policy changes made by Wynn to share tips with floor staff.

Encore Las Vegas

Encore Las Vegas or Encore at Wynn Las Vegas (often just called Encore) is a luxury resort, casino, hotel located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The resort is connected to its sister resort, Wynn Las Vegas; both are owned by Wynn Resorts Limited, headed by noted casino developer Steve Wynn.

History

On April 28, 2006, Wynn Las Vegas celebrated its one year anniversary by breaking ground on a second hotel tower. Initially named the Encore Suites at Wynn Las Vegas, the 2,034 room hotel project cost $2.3 billion and was sited for a spot adjacent to the existing resort and on the remaining frontage of Las Vegas Boulevard. Originally envisioned as an expansion of Wynn Las Vegas, Encore Las Vegas quickly became a full-scale resort; it shares resources and is connected to the Wynn resort via a shopping arcade. The resort was estimated to add 5,300 jobs to the Las Vegas area.

After 2½ years of construction, the resort formally opened to the public at 8:00pm on December 22, 2008 to large crowds. Due to the period's economic downturn, the opening was designed to be more subdued than previous casino resort openings. The resort's jewelery shop featured the 231 carats (46 g; 710 gr), prune-sized Wynn Diamond, which was billed as "the largest cut pear-shaped diamond in the world." To open the betting, Steve Wynn gave invited high-rollers a few million dollars to make the initial bets and marked the initial start by declaring over a microphone, "Let the games begin!"; the start of gambling was accompanied by a recording of Frank Sinatra's "Luck Be a Lady Tonight."

Luxor Las Vegas

The Luxor Las Vegas is a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. Ground was broken for the Luxor in 1991, that same year construction began on the Treasure Island. It has a new highly modernized and contemporary design and contains a total of 4,407 rooms lining the interior walls of a pyramid style tower and contained within twin ziggurat towers that were built as later additions. The hotel is named after the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes) in Egypt.

In July 2007, owner MGM Mirage announced plans to thoroughly renovate the Luxor, spending $300 million to remodel 80 percent of Luxor's public areas, removing much of the ancient Egyptian theme and replacing it with more adult-oriented and modern lounges, restaurants and clubs. Among the distinctive changes to the exterior occurred in mid-2007, when management covered one of the pyramid's massive black faces with a 15-story sign that advertises Absolut Vodka. On June 16, 2008 the sign was taken down.

Location and history

The Luxor is located on the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip, opposite the McCarran International Airport. The resort is flanked by the Mandalay Bay to the south and by the Excalibur to the north; all three are connected by free express and local trams. All three properties were built by Circus Circus Enterprises, which later became Mandalay Resort Group.

When it opened on October 15, 1993, the pyramid was the tallest building on the strip and took 2 years to build and a total of 968 workers; it cost $375 million to build. A theater and two additional hotel towers totaling 2,000 rooms were added in 1998 for $675 million.[1] In June 2004, the Mandalay Resort Group was purchased by MGM Mirage, adding this hotel to its vast array of properties on the "Strip".

When the resort opened, it featured a river that encircled the casino with a ferry that would carry guests to different parts of the pyramid. After guests complained that the ferry service took too long, it was turned into the Nile River Tour, a river ride that passed by many pieces of ancient artwork. Most of the ancient Egypt theme and the river ride were taken away as part of a campaign to tailor the property towards more upscale tastes in 1995.

The resort has been home to some popular entertainment attractions in the Las Vegas area. The main level featured the nightclub, RA, which closed indefinitely on July 22, 2006. From 2000 to 2005, the Luxor Theatre was the home of the enormously popular performance-art show Blue Man Group, which has since moved to The Venetian. On February 15, 2006, the main theater became the home of the musical Hairspray which ran until 2006.

In 2006, MGM-Mirage began completely remodeling Luxor. Rooms in the East and West Towers have been refurnished. Two upscale restaurants, Isis and Sacred Sea Room, closed. This space became CatHouse and the renowned Company American Bistro. The RA nightclub, which had previously been one of the most successful in the city but had been seeing reduced attendance in recent years, was shuttered. Replacing it is the Las Vegas branch of LAX, a Los Angeles nightclub, which opened on August 31, 2007, in an event hosted by Britney Spears. The Luxor Steakhouse was renovated and reopened as Tender Steak & Seafood. The IMAX is now used to host a human bodies exhibition, and the IMAX theater is being renovated to host an exhibition on the RMS Titanic.

Illusionist Criss Angel signed a deal in 2006 to tape episodes of his TV series Mindfreak at the hotel. Angel currently has a production office and store in the Luxor. In 2008, Criss Angel starred in a new magic-themed Cirque du Soleil production at Luxor.

Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino

Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino is a 43-story luxury hotel casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. It is owned by MGM Mirage. Five floors (floors 35–39) of the main hotel building are used by the five-star and AAA Five-Diamond Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas.[1] The top 3 floors (numbered as floors 70-72) are penthouses, with a penthouse lounge on level 72 for guests staying in the penthouses. It is connected by the free Mandalay Bay Tram to its sister properties, Excalibur and Luxor.

Mandalay Bay has 3,309 hotel rooms and a casino of 135,000 sq ft (12,500 m2). The adjacent Mandalay Bay Convention Center has almost 1,000,000 sq ft (93,000 m2) of space. In addition, the Mandalay Bay Events Center hosts events including boxing, the UFC's MMA pay-per-views and concerts. It hosted the Latin Grammy Awards in 2007 and 2009.

History

On December 31, 1996, the Hacienda was imploded to make way for Mandalay Bay.

The working title for the $950 million resort and casino was "Project Paradise", officially replaced with Mandalay Bay in 1998.

During construction engineers discovered vertical movements and particularly differential movements ('dishing') between the tower core and the wings. The tower core was sinking at a rate of 1/2 to 3/4 inches per week and the wings were sinking at a slower rate causing differential distortion between the column bays. If these movements were not stopped structural damage would occur. Construction was halted while a solution was developed and implemented. The solution proved to be the installation of micro-piles (formerly marketed as 'Pin Piles') filled with grout 200 feet deep below the structure each capped with a hydraulic jack to stabilize the structure at the desired vertical height to carry the weight[2]. Since then, there have not been any reports of this problem recurring.

The gold coloring of the hotel is a result of gold leaf used on the windows.

The resort opened on March 2, 2000, with actors Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi, and John Goodman headlining a parade of Harley-Davidson motorcycles through Mandalay Bay's front doors to celebrate the grand opening.

The convention center was added in January 2003. When it opened, it was ranked as the fifth largest in the United States. It also offered the largest unobstructed ballroom in the country, at 100,000 ft² (9,000 m²).

In 2004 a new 43-story tower was opened with 1,120 suites, called THEhotel at Mandalay Bay. The hotel contains 1,117 one-bedroom suites, each at least 750 square feet (70 m2). The top floor of THEhotel is a restaurant and bar called Mix. The bar has an age restriction of 21+.

Mandalay Bay is connected to Luxor by both a monorail and shopping mall called Mandalay Place which also features restaurants.

The Las Vegas Review Journal reports that a condo-hotel called THEplace is planned on land across from the hotel belonging to the Luxor.

THEhotel at Mandalay Bay

The Hotel is a 43-story 1,117 luxury suite hotel owned and operated by MGM Mirage. It is located in Paradise, Nevada on the Las Vegas Strip within the Mandalay Bay complex.

Historically all rooms in The Hotel were suites of at least 750 sq ft (70 m2). The suites are composed of two rooms. Floors 39-41 (marked 60-62 in elevators) house Penthouses, which range from 1,500 to 2,500 sq ft (140 to 230 m2). There is also a single Presidential Suite, named "HP," that is over 4,500 sq ft (420 m2). There are also ""deluxe" suites which are available to guests. While similar in style to traditional hotel rooms (single room), they are located on the Penthouse level and feature upgraded sheets, bath products and other amenities not found in the standard suites below.

THEhotel is home to a Michelin-starred restaurant called "MiX" at the top of the hotel. It is an Alain Ducasse restaurant famous for its French and American dishes as well as a spectacular view of most of the Las Vegas Strip.[citation needed]

Excalibur Hotel and Casino

The Excalibur Hotel and Casino is a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States. It is owned and operated by MGM Mirage.

Excalibur, named for the mythical sword of King Arthur, uses the Arthurian theme in several ways. Its facade is a stylized image of a castle. Until 2007, a wizard-like figure representing Merlin looked out from a high turret (since replaced by a figure advertising Dick's Last Resort).

Excalibur is situated at the Tropicana - Las Vegas Boulevard intersection. The intersection is so busy that pedestrians are not allowed to cross at street level. Instead, Excalibur is linked by overhead pedestrian bridges to its neighboring casinos to the north (the New York-New York, across Tropicana Avenue) and to the east (the Tropicana, across the Strip). There is also a free tram that connects Excalibur to its sister MGM Mirage properties to the south, the Luxor and Mandalay Bay. As of 2007, Excalibur has remodeled 2000 of their guest rooms to feature contemporary furnishings and state-of-the-art plasma-screen TV's.

History

The Excalibur opened on June 19, 1990 originally built by the Circus Circus company. It was one of many new, modern Las Vegas hotels that featured children's attractions, such as an arcade and a motion simulator called Merlin's Magic Motion Machine. Another feature of the Excalibur that is prominent is a large family swimming pool. When it opened it was the largest hotel in the world.

On March 21, 2003 the largest Megabucks Jackpot, as of that time, was hit at the Excalibur. The jackpot was for $39,713,982.25. In April 2009 there was a jackpot won in Reno, Nevada, it is now the second largest jackpot ever won, tailing behind the Excalibur jackpot.

On April 26, 2005, the Excalibur, along with the other hotels of the Mandalay Resort Group, was purchased by rival MGM Mirage.

Excalibur now has 2,000 newly remodeled rooms that are called "Widescreen Rooms". The all-new widescreen rooms have been upgraded floor to ceiling. They feature 42" plasma screen televisions, custom pillow top mattresses with Egyptian cotton, contemporary bathrooms with granite countertops, and alarm clocks with iPod inputs. Widescreen rooms also offer the property's best views, as well as its most convenient access to the pool and spa.

History

Bellagio was conceived by Steve Wynn and built by his company, Mirage Resorts, Inc. following the purchase and demolition of the legendary Dunes hotel and casino in 1993. Bellagio was designed by Marnell Corrao Associates and Jon Jerde. Bellagio had an original construction cost of US$1.6 billion.

The Bellagio opened October 15, 1998, just before 11 p.m. in a ceremony that cost a reported US$88 million. The VIPs invited to the grand opening were expected to donate to The Foundation Fighting Blindness US$1,000 a person or US$3,500 a couple, which entitled them to an overnight stay at Bellagio's suite rooms.

Opening night's entertainment began with Steve Wynn giving a 40-minute welcome speech followed by the opening of the Cirque du Soleil production "O." Performing in Bellagio lounges that night were New York cabaret and recording artist Michael Feinstein, George Bugatti and John Pizarrelli. When it opened, it was the most expensive hotel ever built at around US$1.6 billion.

In 2000 it became an MGM Mirage property when Mirage Resorts merged with MGM Grand Inc. to create MGM Mirage.

The Bellagio employs approximately 10,000 people. In the fall of 2006, the casino floor was remodeled and new uniforms were issued, changing the original color scheme to a more elegant type.

History

A Hollywood Beginning

The Flamingo site occupies 40 acres originally owned by one of Las Vegas' first settlers, Charles "Pops" Squires. Mr. Squires paid $8.75 an acre for the land. In 1944, Margaret Folsom bought the tract for $7,500 from Squires, and she then later sold it to Billy Wilkerson. Billy Wilkerson was the owner of the Hollywood Reporter as well as some very popular nightclubs in the Sunset Strip: Cafe Trocadero, Ciro's and La Rue's.

In 1945, Wilkerson purchased 33 acres on the west side of U.S. Route 91, about one mile (1.6 km) south of the Last Frontier in preparation for his vision. Wilkerson then hired George Vernon Russell to design a hotel that was more in the European style and something other than the "sawdust joints" on Fremont Street. He planned a hotel with luxurious rooms, a spa, health club, showroom, golf course, nightclub and an upscale restaurant. Due to high wartime materials costs, Wilkerson ran into financial problems almost at once, finding himself $400,000 short and hunting for new financing.

History

In 1962, Jay Sarno, a cabana motel owner, used US$10 million that had been lent to him by the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund to begin plans for a hotel on land owned by Kirk Kerkorian. Sarno would later act as designer of the hotel he planned to construct.

Building of the 14-story Caesars Palace hotel began in 1962. That first tower would have 680 rooms on the 34 acre (138,000 m2) site.

Sarno struggled to decide on a name for the hotel. He finally decided to call it Caesars Palace because he thought that the name Caesar would evoke thoughts of royalty because of Roman general Julius Caesar. Sarno felt that guests should feel they were at a king's home while at his hotel. It is called "Caesars" and not "Caesar's" because every guest is a Caesar.

Sarno contracted many companies to build the hotel, from the Roman landscapes it presents, to the water fountains that have been stages of various events and the hotel's swimming pools.

On August 5, 1966, the hotel was inaugurated, with Andy Williams and Phil Richards providing entertainment; they both played Julius Caesar at a play that night. Two days later, Latin bandleader Xavier Cugat and flamenco guitarist Charo became the first couple to marry in the new establishment.

On December 31, 1967, Evel Knievel unsuccessfully tried to jump the hotel's water fountain with his motorcycle.

In 1969, Stuart and Clifford S Perlman, founders of the Lums chain of restaurants, purchased the hotel. On July 15 of that year, executives lay ground on an expansion area of the hotel, and they buried a time capsule in the area, but the time capsule was stolen days later.

In 1973, the Del Webb company was contracted to build a 16-story building adjacent to the Palace. The project was finished in 1974.

Many top performers, such as Celine Dion, Bette Midler, Liberace, Elton John, George Burns, Pat Cooper, Diana Ross, Cher, Julio Iglesias, Judy Garland, David Copperfield, Gloria Estefan, Phyllis Diller, Frank Sinatra and Mariah Carey have performed at the hotel.
